Gimme Shelter
19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 February, 1 March 2004 A new digitally remastered copy of the classic documentary of the Rolling Stones on tour in 1969 – including additional footage not shown in its original. Directed by ‘The Maysles Brothers’, David and Albert, the movie gives a less glamorous look at the ‘peace and love’ culture of the Sixties than its counterpart, Woodstock. What started out as a simple fly-on-the-wall registration of the Stones performing live made veritable history when a free concert given by the group at Altamont Speedway, California, descended into chaos after the Hell’s Angels were put in charge of security. Four concertgoers – as many as the babies born at the concert – died, with one fatal stabbing captured on celluloid. As well as the Rolling Stones, it includes shots of Ike and Tina Turner, and Jefferson Airplane, featuring Grace Slick. Athough disturbing it remains compulsive and vital viewing. Posted by PiP |
