Traditionally, every summer the Filmmuseum presents a programme based around a famous filmstar and this year’s choice of Audrey Hepburn has an added poignancy...

The Belgian-born screen icon actually lived in Amsterdam following the war, studying ballet under Sonia Gaskell (who was responsible for founding the dance company that later evolved into the Dutch National Ballet). And the programme of some 20 films includes Hepburn’s film debut, Nederlands in Seven Lessen (Dutch in Seven Lessons), a 1948 documentary made in the Netherlands in which she plays a KLM stewardess. Other gems include classics Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina and Funny Face, as well as the controversial The Children’s Hour and her last role, as an angel, in Always.

Plus, Filmmuseum Cinerama (Marnixstraat 400) is screening a new copy of the Hitchcock-style thriller Charade (in which she appears on screen for the only time with Cary Grant).

What’s more, to coincide with the retrospective, the Filmmuseum is also holding an exhibition about Hepburn consisting of various memorabilia, photos, information on her charity work for Unicef, plus a number of the costumes specially designed for her by Givenchy (including the red cocktail dress she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s).
