Set in 9th-century Japan, Tea tells the story of High Monk, Seikyo, who has a firm ritual of drinking tea from an empty bowl. When asked by the other monks why he does this, he replies that ten years earlier he was once a prince but became a monk following a bitter love experience. The story then goes back ten years earlier to China, at the time of the Tang Dynasty, when Seikyo is still a prince and in love with Lan, the daughter of the Chinese emperor...
