On the eve of Dutch Liberation Day, on the day we remember those who fought and died for that freedom, in a world where too many nations still live under the rule of occupying forces – Theatergroep Trezoor celebrates freedom with a reading of John Steinbeck's classic The Moon is Down.

Born out of personal stories told to him by people fleeing Nazi atrocities, The Moon is Down is unabashed propaganda aimed at all who call themselves defenders of liberty. But while the reality of violence is never far away, it is not the central feature of his story – or the main tool of the resistance. Rather, Steinbeck tells a story of honor, truth-telling, the slow crumbling of a soldier’s heroic self-image, and the power that comes from small braveries. Largely forgotten in the 60 years since 'the last good war', The Moon is Down was a powerful motivational and fundraising tool of the resistance.
