In De Waag

British author and guest Independent on Sunday columnist Rohan Candappa will be in town on Thursday 26 May to talk on his book The Curious Incident of the WMD in Iraq. Tonight, is your opportunity to talk books over dinner with him.

Crowning the Nieuwmarkt square and resembling a fairytale castle, De Waag dates from 1488 and was originally St Anthony's Port, the gates to the old city of Amsterdam. In 1617 it was extended and became a weigh-house where ships sailing up the Gelderskade would unload and weigh their products. The upstairs of the building was assigned to various guilds in the city including the Surgeon's Guild: in the central turreted tower, was the Anatomy Theater, where Rembrandt famously painted Dr Tulip and The Anatomy Lesson.
