An assignment to photograph Judy Garland on A Star is Born began a non-stop collaboration with all of the major Hollywood studios. Paul Weller

25 October 2004
Vredenburg (Utrecht)

Since his days with legendary British group The Jam in the late 1970s, later fronting The Style Council (who had the ultimate laidback hit Long Hot Summer), the ‘Modfather’ established himself as one of the UK’s most successful singer-songwriters. At the start of the 1990s, Weller went it alone. Expect both new stuff as well as some old Jam classics as rumour has it they’re back on his playlist...

Ken Wilkie: The Van Gogh File

13 October 2004
Amstelkerk

'USA Travel Journalist of the Year 2004' and former long-serving editor of Holland Herald, Ken Wilkie will be giving a talk on his recently-released The Van Gogh File. The fascinating – and occasionally controversial – book documents the Scottish writer's journey as he set out from Amsterdam in the early 1970s, commissioned by Holland Herald to write a story on Vincent Van Gogh. The assignment turned into a journey, spanning four decades, which uncovered some fascinating new insights into the life of the enigmatic artist: Wilkie discovered the identity of Van Gogh's first love, the home they shared in Brixton, London; the disease that lead to the deaths of both Vincent and his brother Theo; and his possible grandchildren who had no idea they could be related to Van Gogh...

Loft

11 October - 7 November 2004
Theater Fabriek Amsterdam

Another circus comes to town. This time from Montreal and in the form of an international troupe of seven young performers, spawned from Cirque du Soleil, who put their inimitable anarchic twist on aerial acts, clowning, juggling and acrobatics in a visually-rich show. Note this show was originally due to run for just a few days in October but owing to its success, it's been extended to 7 November.

Solomon Burke & The Souls Alive Band

7 October 2004
Paradiso

The former preacher and early soul pioneer of the 1960s whose songs Cry To Me and Everybody Needs Somebody To Love The Rolling Stones covered is in town for a night of heavenly gospel.

Groove Armada

4, 5 October 2004
Paradiso

The sample-laden Vertigo album, released at the beginning of 2000 featuring If Everybody Looked the Same and I See You Baby, remixed by Fatboy Slim, along with the delightfully lazy At The River catapulted British duo Tom Findlay and Andy Cato onto dance floors around the world. One caveat: their concerts sell out pretty quick!

Katie Melua

3 October 2004
Vredenburg (Utrecht)

The 19-year-old singer/songwriter who's been favourably compared to Nora Jones and had the hit with The Closest Thing To Crazy (which I quite liked, I'm embarassed to admit). Her debut album Call Off The Search was number one in the British album charts for a month last November. Apparently.
