April 2005 Queen and Paul Rodgers
26 April 2005 The first tour of Queen since 1986, with Paul Rodgers (ex-Free/Bad Company) taking the place of Freddie Mercury. World Press Photo 2005 25 April-19 June 2005 This year marks the 50th anniversary of this prestigious annual exhibition of award-winning photojournalism, which opens in Amsterdam before travelling onto 80 cities worldwide. This year's overall winner is Arko Datta (Reuters, India) with a photo showing a woman mourning a relative killed on the Boxing Day tsunami in Cuddalore in India. As usual, a retrospective of the winner’s work will be on show alongside the other award-winning photos (divided into themes). Additionally, there will be a 50 Years Gallery featuring all the winning shots from the past half-a-century. Although the exhibition can often be confronting (there is something intrinsically powerful about a still - as opposed to moving - image) it remains a veritable hommage to the photo-journalist who often works in life-threatening conditions to report the news. 5 April 2005 Filmmuseum Biennial 2005
5-10 April 2005 A superb festival packed with silent movies featuring live musical accompaniment, surreal avant-garde classics, art films, Dutch gems (with English subtitles!) and highlights from the Filmmuseum collection – including the recently discovered Beyond the Rocks (Sam Wood, US, 1922). This the only film where Rudolph Valentino plays opposite Gloria Swanson and was thought lost forever until discovered by chance in the Filmmuseum's archives last year, making headline news around the globe. Its world première screening will take place at the Tuschinski on 5 April (see below) to mark the official opening of the Filmmuseum Biennial. Other highlights of the festival include new restorations of classics such as Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr (1932). More about Filmmuseum Biennial 2005 |
