Around 30 private gardens – hidden behind 17th, 18th and 19th-century houses on the city’s most beautiful canals – open to the public for three days. A free boat connects several gardens and additional activities include wine-tasting and classical music recitals.

This year, India, home to the world's biggest film industry, is holding the Bollywood equivalent of the Oscars in Amsterdam. Alongside the main ceremony (taking place on June 11 at the Amsterdam Arena), there's a screening of a world première in the 1921 Art Deco cinema, Tuschinski, plus a celebrity cricket match and various galas. Film stars Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan are amongst those expected to attend.

An appeance by the London-born 1960s icon known as much for her long affair with Mick Jagger as her music. Her debut single, the Jagger/Richards-penned As Tears Go By, was a huge hit in 1964 and other typically poignant and despairing recordings have followed since, including 1987’s fabulous Strange Weather.

Note: This concert was originally scheduled for 10 December but was cancelled due to ill health...
